Contactless object and person detection in safety-critical areas via UHF RFID with up to 10 m read range

Munich, December 01, 2021 – With the DT362GL and DT382GL, Munich-based VAD Concept International has added two rugged 6- and 8-inch tablets to its product range for applications in the field of mobile identity and object verification. The two slim tablets from DT Research are particularly suitable for applications in logistics, warehousing or the Industry 4.0 environment, where they are used for reliable mobile object recognition, but also for access to government and corporate buildings, access to computer networks or other restricted areas. The integrated RFID reader (optional UHF) detects objects contactlessly from distances up to 10 meters. A barcode scanner and a GNSS module can be added. Furthermore, they offer a full-size smart card reader for user authentication. The hardware is certified according to protection class IP65 as well as the military standard MIL-STD-810G. Both tablets run Microsoft Windows 10 IoT Enterprise.

Contactless access control means that there is no need to stop a vehicle, present a card or enter an access code. The integrated UHF/RFID interfaces contactlessly detect machines, tools, vehicles or people equipped with the corresponding tags within a range of 5 m. Based on an external pistol grip antenna, ranges of up to 10 m are possible.

Via the additionally installed barcode scanner, the device can read all common 1D and 2D codes (barcodes and QR codes).

A U-blox M8 GNSS module determines the tablet’s own geographic position with high precision, which is useful, for example, to provide captured goods or people with a time and location stamp.

The tablets have an integrated, full-size smart card/CAC reader that matches the user’s smart card with his or her stored PIN number and meets the requirements for two-factor authentication, for example for secure access to computer systems and networks. The smart card/CAC reader uses digital signature technologies and encrypts data based on current standards.

The extremely robust hardware is certified to IP65 protection class as well as the MIL-STD-810G military standard. Shocks, dust and moisture cannot harm the tablets, and drops do not affect them.

Both systems feature a capacitive LED backlight touch display that is easy to read even in sunlight.

The tablets feature built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, hot-swappable batteries, and a vehicle-mounting and charging option.

The DT362GL and DT382GL tablets run Microsoft Windows 10 IoT Enterprise and use an Intel Pentium Silver quad-core processor with a clock speed of 1.1 to 2.7 GHz, supported by 8GB of RAM – a real standout, especially for a 6″ handheld device. Both systems are expandable with SSD hard drives up to 2TB.
